**Cyprus and Greece Conduct Naval Cooperation Exercise Off South Coast**
On Tuesday, a naval cooperation exercise was conducted between Cyprus and Greece as part of the large-scale military drill known as Nikitis-Dimitra 2026. The exercise, designated DNPN/02-2026, took place in the maritime area between Larnaca and Limassol, according to an announcement from the Cypriot defense ministry on Thursday.
The exercise involved the National Guard's offshore patrol vessel Ioannides and the Hellenic Navy frigate Elli. The training scenario included a series of tactical maneuvers, technical drills, and communications exercises designed to enhance operational effectiveness at sea. The ministry emphasized the importance of this joint training, noting that it significantly improved interoperability between the two naval forces and facilitated the exchange of expertise related to naval operations.
Lieutenant General Emmanuel Theodorou, Chief of the National Guard, observed the exercise from the sea and commended the crews of both vessels for their professionalism and high level of training. The commander of the frigate Elli echoed these sentiments, highlighting the exercise as a demonstration of the strong ties between Cyprus and Greece.
He stated, "Following the completion of today’s joint training, I would like to express the great honour and pleasure we had in operating alongside our brothers in the Cypriot navy. The bonds between Greece and Cyprus are historic, unbreakable and have stood the test of time. At a time of evolving challenges, our joint presence at sea reaffirms our shared commitment to security, stability, and the defense of our common values."
The naval exercise is part of ongoing defense cooperation between the two nations and reflects their commitment to strengthening coordination and readiness in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This collaboration is seen as vital in addressing the evolving security challenges in the area.
As both countries continue to enhance their military cooperation, exercises like DNPN/02-2026 serve not only to bolster their naval capabilities but also to reinforce the longstanding relationship between Cyprus and Greece. The successful execution of this exercise is expected to pave the way for further joint activities in the future, contributing to regional stability and security.
