Greece followed with the next-lowest rate at 4.3 deaths per 100,000, and Malta with 5.5. At the other end of the scale, Lithuania recorded the highest rate at 18.8 deaths per 100,000, followed by Slovenia at 16.4 and Hungary at 16.1. The EU’s standardised suicide mortality rate, which adjusts for differences in age structure between countries, stood at 10.4 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2023, down from 10.6 in 2022 and 12.2 in 2013. Eurostat said the figures point to a decline in the rate both compared with the previous year and over the longer term. A total of 48,370 EU residents died in 2023 as a result of intentional self-harm, accounting for 1 per cent of all deaths across the Union. Looking at unadjusted, or crude, figures, the rate was significantly higher among men, at 16.9 deaths per 100,000 men, compared with 5 deaths per 100,000 women. Men accounted for 76.4 per cent of all suicide deaths across the EU in 2023. Among member states, the male share of suicide deaths ranged from 70.2 per cent in the Netherlands to 90.3 per cent in Malta. The rate also rose with age, Eurostat said. Among people under 15, it stood at 0.2 deaths per 100,000, compared with 17.3 deaths per 100,000 among those aged 65 and over. Men recorded higher suicide mortality rates than women across all age groups, with the exception of children under 15, where rates for boys and girls were similar.
