**Cyprus’ Heritage and Spells Come Alive at Faneromeni26 Arts Festival**
Nicosia, Cyprus – The Faneromeni26 Arts Festival, organized by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, is set to showcase a unique musical performance titled "Dimman Liman" on Thursday, June 25. This event promises to enchant attendees in downtown Nicosia, offering a contemporary musical-theatrical experience deeply rooted in Cyprus’ intangible cultural heritage.
"Dimman Liman" stands out not only for its musical composition but also for its thematic exploration of ancient spells and rituals that have been part of Cypriot daily life for generations. These practices, preserved in various written sources, are woven into the fabric of the performance, creating a bridge between the past and the present.
The performance features a talented ensemble of five young Cypriot musicians, formed through the collaboration of two distinct groups: the experimental trio known as The Portal and the traditional ensemble Takouria. The Portal includes Stelios Antoniou on percussion and analogue effects, George Holland on flute and live electronics, and Yiannis Laoutaris on synthesizer, vocals, and live electronics. Meanwhile, Takouria features Christos Isidorou and Kyriakos Markoullis playing the zurna, along with Yannis Laoutaris on the daouli.
This collaboration aims to create a rich auditory experience that blends sonic experimentation and improvisation with the revival of traditional musical practices. The performance utilizes a variety of instruments predominantly found in Eastern musical traditions, while also incorporating electronic media and contemporary techniques. This fusion results in a hybrid soundscape that not only honors the timelessness of Cypriot tradition but also showcases its potential for transformation in a modern context.
