**‘Cyprus’ Journey Through the Ages’ Unveiled in Protaras with Support from Island Oil**
Protaras, Cyprus – A new sculpture titled “Cyprus’ Journey Through the Ages” was unveiled on Saturday, September 19, on the coastal promenade in the Xistaria area of Protaras. The artwork, created by renowned Cypriot sculptor Philippos Yiapanis, is designed to represent the historical and cultural journey of Cyprus, emphasizing the enduring connections between Cypriot Hellenism and Greece.
The unveiling ceremony took place at Lefkolla, a location that holds significant symbolic value as it overlooks the occupied city of Famagusta and the ancient site of Salamis. This placement enhances the sculpture's role as a monument of remembrance, historical continuity, and hope for the future. The presence of the sculpture in a public space is expected to enrich the cultural identity of the area, providing both residents and visitors with a new landmark where art intersects with history and collective memory.
The creation of the sculpture was made possible through the generosity of Chrysostomos and Katerina Papavassiliou, who donated the piece. Their company, Island Oil Holdings, along with the support of the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia, facilitated the installation of the artwork. The event was held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, highlighting the collaborative efforts involved in bringing this project to fruition.
Chrysostomos Papavassiliou, CEO and chairman of Island Oil Holdings, spoke at the unveiling, describing the sculpture as a deeply symbolic representation of Cyprus's ongoing division. He reflected on his personal connection to Yiapanis, noting that they both attended the Second Gymnasium of Famagusta together. Papavassiliou articulated the artwork’s significance, stating, “Philippos Yiapanis created a symbolic work. Half a boat, half an occupied Cyprus,” which he interpreted as a representation of “a journey that remains unfinished.”
The sculpture serves not only as a tribute to those who have been lost and those who remain missing but also as a reminder of the uprooted compatriots who have faced displacement. Papavassiliou expressed that the donation aims to combat the risk of forgetting the past, stating, “For us, this donation represents a small contribution to the fight against oblivion.” He emphasized that it also embodies hope for the reunification of Cyprus, advocating for peace, security, and respect for cultural heritage in accordance with European principles.
The event drew attention to the importance of cultural contributions in fostering a sense of community and identity. Papavassiliou extended his gratitude to Yiapanis for his artistic vision, as well as to Mayor Giorgos Nikolettos and the Municipal Council for their ongoing commitment to enhancing the cultural landscape of the region. He also thanked the Deputy Ministry of Culture and all those involved in the organization of the ceremony.
