**Cyprus Plans New Organization to Enhance International Student Recruitment**
Nicosia, Cyprus – In a significant move to bolster its higher education sector, Cyprus is set to establish a new organization modeled after the British Council. This initiative aims to promote Cypriot universities on the international stage and attract a greater number of international students. The announcement was made by President Nikos Christodoulides during a ceremony held at Frederick University in Nicosia on Wednesday.
President Christodoulides emphasized that preparatory work has already commenced for this coordinated national effort, which will involve collaboration between both public and private educational institutions. The primary goal of the new organization will be to position Cypriot universities as a premier destination for international education, thereby enhancing the recruitment of what the president referred to as “quality students from abroad.”
The establishment of this body is seen as a strategic move to support the overseas promotion of Cypriot higher education and foster cooperation among various institutions. Higher education is a vital economic sector for Cyprus, contributing approximately 7 to 8 percent to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Recognizing its importance, President Christodoulides highlighted the need for a balanced approach that prioritizes academic standards and the quality of courses, rather than focusing solely on enrollment figures.
“We should not get carried away with figures alone,” he stated, underscoring the importance of maintaining high academic standards while also expanding the reach of Cypriot universities. The government is committed to implementing a coherent strategy aimed at enhancing opportunities for young people and strengthening research capabilities within the country.
During his address, the president also noted the recent developments at Frederick University, particularly the establishment of a new medical school in partnership with the University of Manchester. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure the continuous development of the higher education sector in Cyprus, aligning with the government's vision for a robust educational framework.
The planned organization is expected to play a crucial role in promoting the diverse academic offerings available in Cyprus and in creating a more attractive environment for international students. By enhancing visibility and cooperation among educational institutions, the government aims to elevate the profile of Cypriot universities globally.
As Cyprus moves forward with this initiative, it is poised to strengthen its position as a competitive player in the international education market, providing quality education and fostering a diverse learning environment for students from around the world.
