**Cyprus Pledges €200,000 in Humanitarian Aid to Flood-Hit Nepal**
In a significant gesture of international solidarity, the government of Cyprus has announced a commitment of €200,000 in humanitarian aid to Nepal, following the devastating flash floods that occurred last week. This aid will be distributed through CyprusAid, the nation’s humanitarian assistance program, as confirmed by the foreign ministry on Monday.
The catastrophic flooding was triggered by a landslide near the Nepal-China border, which occurred last Wednesday. This event unleashed a torrent of water, ice, and debris into the Bhote Koshi river basin, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. As of Monday, Nepal’s disaster management authority reported a grim toll of 903 fatalities, with an alarming 4,247 individuals still unaccounted for.
The Cypriot aid will be allocated through the United Nations emergency response fund and UNICEF, aiming to provide immediate relief to those affected by this natural disaster. The foreign ministry emphasized that “international solidarity and humanitarian action remain fundamental principles of the foreign policy of Cyprus,” highlighting the country's commitment to supporting nations in crisis.
Rescue operations in Nepal have faced significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions and the difficult terrain of the affected areas. In light of these obstacles, Nepal has reached out for specialized assistance from neighboring countries, including India and China, to bolster their ongoing rescue efforts.
The Cypriot government’s decision to provide financial assistance underscores a broader commitment to humanitarian efforts on the international stage, reinforcing the importance of global cooperation in times of crisis.
