**Cyprus Power System Strained as Two Units Go Offline**

Cyprus is facing significant challenges in its electricity supply as two major production units have gone offline, pushing the national power system to its limits. The situation has raised concerns about the ability to meet rising electricity demand amid a heatwave affecting the region.
The National Energy Control Centre reported that a 105-megawatt (MW) unit at the Vasilikos power station ceased operations on the night of July 21. This unexpected loss has placed immense pressure on the electricity grid, which is already grappling with record-high consumption levels. Charis Zavallis, the assistant director of the Centre, indicated that the power system could only manage demand marginally unless the Dhekelia unit, which is also offline, resumes production.
On July 21, electricity demand reached unprecedented levels, peaking at 1,321 MW during the day and 1,083 MW at night. The situation is expected to worsen, with forecasts predicting daily demand could hit 1,350 MW today, and evening peak consumption could rise to 1,095 MW. These figures underscore the strain on the power infrastructure, particularly during a period of high temperatures that typically drive up energy usage.
Zavallis emphasized the critical nature of the situation, noting that the return of the Dhekelia unit to service would be essential for stabilizing the grid and ensuring a small reserve of electricity. Without this unit, the power system may struggle to meet the heightened demand, leading to potential outages or rolling blackouts if consumption continues to exceed supply capabilities.
