**Cyprus Showcases Maritime Innovation at SMM Hamburg**
Cyprus made a significant mark on the global maritime stage by showcasing its home-grown shipping technology at the SMM Hamburg exhibition on September 1, 2023. The event, which runs until September 4, features approximately 2,300 exhibitors from around 70 countries and is expected to attract around 50,000 participants from 120 nations.
The Cyprus Maritime Innovation Event, organized by the Ministry of Energy and the Shipping Deputy Ministry, aimed to highlight the advancements made by local companies in maritime technology, focusing on tools designed to enhance safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency in shipping.
During the opening ceremony, trade and industry officer Andri Katomoniatou Iakovou and George Stavrinou, Cyprus’ deputy chief of mission in Germany, spoke about the enduring commercial and maritime ties between Cyprus and Germany. They emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration between research, technology, and maritime businesses as the shipping industry faces increasing regulatory pressures and rapid technological advancements.
Christina Patsiou, acting director and senior maritime affairs officer at the Shipping Deputy Ministry, outlined the government's strategic approach to maritime administration. She highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting fleet decarbonization, digitalizing administrative processes, and attracting maritime technology companies to Cyprus. These efforts reflect the island's commitment to adapting to the evolving landscape of the shipping industry.
The event also featured presentations from various Cypriot companies and research organizations, showcasing innovative solutions to everyday challenges faced by vessels. Zacharias Siokouros, chief executive of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, discussed collaborative research projects that bridge the gap between academic research and the practical needs of commercial fleets.
Christos Georgiou, chief product and AI officer at Prevention at Sea, presented insights on how artificial intelligence and digital applications can enhance onboard safety and risk management. Stelios Christofi, deputy sales manager at Onetech Services, introduced marine engineering solutions aimed at improving vessel performance, while Elsa Markoulidou, systems integration manager at Supernova Consulting, focused on the importance of creating a unified digital infrastructure for shipping operations.
The presentations highlighted the need for better integration of various enterprise systems within the maritime sector to streamline information management and reduce operational fragmentation.
The afternoon session featured a panel discussion titled "Navigating the Maritime Transition: Innovation, Sustainability and Competitiveness in a Changing World," moderated by Siokouros. The panel included industry leaders such as Petros Achtypis from Prevention at Sea, George Poullaides of Intellar Innovative Solutions, Yiannos Lakkotrypes from Multimarine Services, Vlassis Papapanagis of Tototheo Global, and Marinos Ioannou from Dromon Bureau of Shipping.
The discussion focused on how shipping companies and maritime service providers can navigate the challenges posed by stricter decarbonization requirements while maintaining operational reliability and managing compliance costs. The panelists acknowledged the pressures of volatile market conditions and the need for investment in new technologies, all while ensuring efficient operations.
