The season brought intense instability in July and August, capped by a historic disturbance late in the month that affected almost the entire island. Average summer rainfall for the island, based on the 1961-1990 climatological period, stands at 11.5mm (6.0mm in June, 2.6mm in July and 2.9mm in August), according to KitasWeather. This summer closed with total average rainfall of 37.6mm, more than triple the normal figure. June brought isolated, localised rain and storms, mainly between June 6 and 14. The heaviest rainfall was recorded on June 12, with 46.6mm in Polystypos, followed by 36.7mm in Kyperounta. July saw periods of more intense instability, particularly between July 5 and 8, with the most severe storms hitting mountainous, semi-mountainous and inland areas on July 6 and 7. On July 6, Kambos recorded 59.5mm of rain, with Mammari and Xyliatos recording 41.9mm and 41.5mm respectively. On July 7, extreme rainfall hit Agros (100.3mm), Odou (65.8mm) and Agioi Vavatsinias (57.6mm) — the Agros figure a record for July since the station was established in 1976. The extreme rainfall caused rivers south of the Troodos mountain range to flow torrentially for that time of year and produced a temporary rise in water inflows to dams, particularly the Kouris dam. August brought several more days of intense instability, along with that historic late-month disturbance. Storms with gusty winds and heavy, localised rain struck between August 13 and 19: isolated storms hit the island’s occupied areas on August 16; intense, prolonged rain flooded western Nicosia on August 17, with the Public Works Department station in Makedonitissa recording 62.2mm and the Pedieos river running torrential, while Xyliatos recorded 47.2mm; and on August 18, storms dumped 63mm and 58mm respectively on Agros and Agioi Vavatsinias in about an hour, sending the Limnatis river — which feeds into the Kouris dam — into torrent. On August 29, an unprecedented disturbance for August brought near-island-wide rain and severe storms, peaking at 68.4mm in Achna with an average 24-hour total of 22.5mm, KitasWeather said. The same storm turned the sea rough enough off Cape Greco to wreck three boats on the rocks; a 76-year-old businessman from Limassol died after being trapped in the wreckage, while five others aboard were rescued, according to philenews’ previous reporting. The summer rains played a significant role in the wildfire season, keeping vegetation in mountainous areas in good condition, and supported the natural regeneration of forests following recent years of extensive drought, including in areas burned by the large wildfire in Malia. The relatively frequent summer rain in mountainous areas kept the soil saturated through the period, with water continuing to flow in several rivers until the end of summer — a factor expected to allow water inflows into dams to begin early, with the first significant organised weather systems affecting the island in autumn and early winter.
