**Cyprus Red Cross Calls for Quality Donations to Support Vulnerable Families**
The Cyprus Red Cross has issued a call to the public for donations of clean and usable items, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to provide essential goods to families facing financial and social hardships. In a statement released on Monday, the organization highlighted the importance of humanitarian assistance, which includes the collection of clothing, food, and other vital items, as one of its longest-running and most critical activities.
The Red Cross noted that behind every donation lies a meticulously organized process, primarily supported by volunteers. These dedicated individuals are responsible for receiving, sorting, and preparing items for distribution, ensuring that assistance is delivered with dignity to those in need. While clothing donations often receive the most attention, the organization is keen to remind the public that it accepts a broad spectrum of essential goods.
Collection points are available at all district branches of the Red Cross, where non-perishable food items such as pasta, rice, legumes, canned goods, cereals, cooking oil, and coffee can be donated. Additionally, personal hygiene products, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby nappies, and adult incontinence products, are also welcomed. The organization further accepts clothing and footwear, bedding, baby formula, school supplies, children’s books and toys, as well as hospital beds and mobility aids like wheelchairs and crutches. Other items such as kitchenware, furniture, electrical appliances, children’s equipment, and bicycles may be accepted by prior arrangement.
The Cyprus Red Cross stressed that the success of its donation program heavily relies on the condition of the items received. Each donation must be inspected, sorted, and prepared for immediate use, which is why the organization urges the public to contribute only clean, functional items in excellent condition. Clothing should ideally be new or in very good shape, washed, and sorted into categories for men, women, and children, as well as seasonal clothing for summer and winter. Similarly, bedding, footwear, and household goods should be ready for immediate use.
Demetris Fylaktou, the Nicosia branch coordinator, emphasized the importance of the public's willingness to donate, stating, “For an item to have real value, it must be suitable for immediate use and able to meet the specific needs of the people we support every day.” He further noted that the volunteers’ commitment to receiving, sorting, and preparing donations is crucial for the organization’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to requests for assistance. “With the cooperation of the public, every donation can become a genuine act of kindness,” he added.
The Red Cross highlighted that its volunteers play a vital role in the program, ensuring that donations reach those who need them most. Donations are accepted year-round during the opening hours of district branches, while the organization’s purple recycling bins are designated exclusively for clothing collections. Individuals wishing to donate specialized equipment or bulky items are encouraged to contact their local branch in advance to confirm whether the donation can be accommodated.
It is important to note that branches reserve the right to refuse items that do not meet the required standards or if storage capacity has been reached. The collection of essential goods remains a cornerstone of the Red Cross’s humanitarian work throughout the year, and the organization continues to rely on the generosity of the public to support its mission.
As the Cyprus Red Cross continues its efforts to assist vulnerable families, the call for quality donations serves as a reminder of the positive impact that community support can have on those facing difficult circumstances. The organization’s commitment to ensuring that every donation is handled with care and respect underscores the importance of compassion in times of need.
