**Cyprus Retail Sector Sees Robust Growth in May**
The retail sector in Cyprus has demonstrated significant growth in May, as reported by the state statistical service, Cystat. The turnover value index of retail trade experienced a notable year-on-year increase of 9.8%, indicating a strong performance in consumer spending and retail activity across the island.
In addition to the value index, the turnover volume index also showed positive growth, rising by 7.5% compared to May of the previous year. This upward trend suggests that not only are consumers spending more, but they are also purchasing a higher volume of goods.
Among the various categories contributing to this growth, automotive fuel recorded the largest annual increase in the value index, soaring by 20.9%. This surge may reflect heightened travel and transportation activities, as well as fluctuating fuel prices that could influence consumer purchasing behavior.
Other categories also showed impressive growth. The segment encompassing other household equipment, which includes items such as building materials, carpets, furniture, electrical appliances, and lighting, saw a 12% increase in value. This indicates a robust demand for home improvement and furnishing products, possibly driven by ongoing renovations and new home purchases.
Moreover, the sector dealing with educational and recreational goods, which encompasses books, stationery, sporting equipment, and toys, reported a value increase of 10.1%. This growth may be attributed to the back-to-school season and increased consumer interest in recreational activities, especially as communities continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic.
In terms of volume, the clothing and footwear sector led the way with an impressive growth rate of 19.4%. This significant rise suggests a resurgence in fashion retail, as consumers are increasingly willing to refresh their wardrobes. Following closely was the information and communication equipment category, which saw a 17.6% increase, indicating a strong demand for technology products. Other household equipment also experienced a volume increase of 13.3%.
Despite the overall positive trends, some categories did experience declines. The retail volume of automotive fuel saw a decrease of 3.8%, which may be indicative of changing consumer habits or seasonal fluctuations. Additionally, the category that includes flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, optical goods, and second-hand items recorded a decline of 2.1%.
Looking at the broader picture, the period from January to May 2026 has also been favorable for the retail sector. The turnover value index recorded a 7.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025, while the turnover volume index marked a 5.9% increase. These figures suggest a sustained recovery and growth trajectory for the retail market in Cyprus as consumer confidence continues to rebuild.
