The events brought together researchers, start-ups, investors, mentors, industry representatives, policymakers and international experts. Their aim was to highlight scientific research being developed in Cyprus, encourage dialogue around its commercial application, and connect research projects with international expertise, partnerships and investment capital. Speakers and experts took part from the MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation, DTU Skylab, the Research and Innovation Foundation and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. Also represented were Kos Biotechnology Partners, Uni.Fund, 33East, Samsung Ventures, Bulba Ventures, Eleon Capital, Mohari Hospitality, Eurobank Cyprus, Berytech and Plug and Play. Out of the Lab Cyprus Seeds held its fourth Innovation Presentation on May 22, 2026, focused on turning scientific research into products, businesses and solutions with economic and social impact. Cyprus Seeds board chairman Jeremy Downward and Dr Konstantinos Kleovoulou, director of research and innovation at the Deputy Ministry, opened the event, with Kleovoulou representing Deputy Minister Nikodimos Damianos. Research and Innovation Foundation director-general Theodoros Loukaidis then spoke about Cyprus’s commitment to the commercial development of research. Cyprus Seeds founder and managing director Maria Markidou Georgiadou outlined the organisation’s results to date and its future vision. She said successful research development requires long-term support, guidance, strategic partnerships and patient investment. In a discussion with Rana K. Gupta, participants covered the inspiration behind Cyprus Seeds, the influence of the MIT Deshpande model, and the importance of philanthropic funding, trust and international cooperation. Research teams The event also featured presentations from Cyprus Seeds’ fourth-cycle research teams: CAT-BRAIN from the University of Cyprus, RustAlert from the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, PrognomiR from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, M3Phantom, and Prognostic from the University of Cyprus. Cyprus Seeds Innovation Programmes head Margarita Kyprianou coordinated the session. The teams pitched their proposals to an international panel of experts and received feedback on commercialisation strategies, market potential and investment readiness. Artificial intelligence and trust Start-up investor and filmmaker Pablo David Pinedo used his keynote speech to discuss the relationship between trust, artificial intelligence and innovation. He said scientific excellence alone is not enough to turn innovation into meaningful outcomes. Trust, built through transparency, clarity and authenticity, is also essential, he said. Medical research and alumni Round-table discussions examined the challenges of turning medical research into applicable health solutions. Topics covered included clinical validation, regulatory processes, intellectual property, market access and interdisciplinary collaboration. Cyprus Seeds alumni also discussed their journeys from academic research to entrepreneurship, describing the difficulties they faced and how the experience changed the way they work and develop their innovations. Green innovation The discussion on green innovation explored the need for closer cooperation between universities and industry, the role of philanthropic funding, the development of scalable business models, and the importance of international partnerships in bringing climate technologies to market. Investors’ Hour Cyprus Seeds held its first Investors’ Hour on May 21, 2026, giving research start-ups the chance to connect directly with international investors and innovation organisations. Eight start-ups from Cyprus, the UK, Egypt and India took part: Mammocheck Ltd, A.G. FREYIA LABS Ltd, Pitys.ai Ltd, Podisense Ltd, MEDTL Medical Tech, Axioniq, Cluster and Cluix. They put their proposals to 17 investors and innovation organisations from Cyprus, Europe and the diaspora, including 33East, Bulba Ventures, Uni.Fund, Samsung Ventures, Eleon Capital, BiG Pi, Kinisis Ventures and Berytech. Each three-minute presentation was followed by a two-minute question-and-answer session. Founders received targeted feedback and explored potential funding, strategic partnerships and international expansion opportunities. According to Cyprus Seeds, the two events demonstrated its ability to support the full journey of research commercialisation, from laboratory discovery to attracting investment.
