**Cyprus Establishes National Food Safety Authority to Enhance Food Safety Measures**
The government of Cyprus is in the process of establishing a National Food Safety Authority, aimed at improving the coordination and supervision of food safety controls across the nation. Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides announced this initiative on Monday, coinciding with the observance of World Food Safety Day, which is celebrated annually on June 7.
Charalambides emphasized the importance of food safety, stating that it is not only a fundamental right for every individual but also a critical component of public health. He remarked, "Access to safe and quality food is a basic prerequisite for ensuring public health," highlighting the connection between food safety, quality of life, and consumer confidence.
The proposed National Food Safety Authority will be responsible for overseeing official controls conducted by various services and laboratories, as well as drafting a cohesive national strategy for food safety and hygiene throughout the food supply chain. This initiative aims to address food safety comprehensively, from primary production to the consumer's table.
In his address, Charalambides noted that the theme for this year's World Food Safety Day, "From Burden to Solutions, Safe Food Everywhere," calls for a shift from merely identifying food safety issues to implementing effective solutions. He stressed that scientific data is essential for developing targeted policies and managing risks effectively, all while prioritizing public health.
The Health Minister pointed out that every solution for ensuring safe food begins with the early identification of potential risks and proper risk assessment. He stated, "Behind every documented decision for consumer protection lies reliable scientific data," underscoring the importance of data-driven decision-making in food safety.
The general laboratory of the health ministry will play a pivotal role in this new framework, serving as the primary source for scientific data and documentation. Charalambides explained that the laboratory provides specialized support to authorities, conducts thousands of tests on food, water, and food contact materials each year, and plays a crucial role in implementing both European and national food safety legislation.
These laboratory tests are vital for the early detection of potential risks, allowing for timely corrective measures that protect public health. The Health Minister reiterated that food safety is a collective responsibility, with every link in the food chain contributing to the overall quality and safety of food.
In addition to establishing the National Food Safety Authority, Cyprus is actively participating in various initiatives to promote food safety awareness. One such initiative is the European #Safe2Eat campaign, which aims to foster a culture of knowledge, responsibility, and trust among consumers regarding food safety.
