Asked whether the hot spell could last longer or intensify, Papadakis said there was “certainly a possibility” over the coming days and that developments would continue to be monitored. He said conditions could be particularly difficult in some areas because of the combination of high temperatures and humidity. “It is difficult on the coast,” Papadakis said. While temperatures in Nicosia may remain around 40C, he noted that higher humidity levels along the coast would also make conditions uncomfortable. A yellow weather warning for high temperatures has been issued for Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach 40C in inland areas. Asked whether the heat could peak or even produce new temperature records in the coming days, Papadakis said conditions would remain “at roughly the same levels over the next few days”, with temperatures expected to reach around 39C to 40C on Saturday. He said very high temperatures were therefore expected to continue, adding that “probably” similar conditions should be expected over the coming days. “It is a similar picture to what we had at the beginning of August,” Papadakis said, adding that temperatures are “slightly above normal”. According to Papadakis, the weather will remain mainly clear, with similar conditions expected to continue throughout the period, at least until Wednesday.
