**Cyprus Theatre Organisation Launches New Season with Exciting Productions**
The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (Thoc) is set to unveil an ambitious new theatre season, highlighted by its summer production of "Ion" by Euripides. This production, which is scheduled to premiere shortly, will tour various locations across Cyprus starting July 16 before culminating in performances at the prestigious Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Athens on August 28 and 29. This marks Thoc's return to the historic venue after an eight-year hiatus, showcasing its commitment to bringing classical works to both local and international audiences.
The announcement of the new season was made by Pantelis Voutouris, the Chairman of Thoc's Board, who outlined an artistic programme that promises a diverse array of theatrical experiences for audiences from July 2026 to May 2027.
One of the season's highlights is Agatha Christie's classic detective story, "Murder on the Orient Express," which will be directed by Takis Tzamargias. Following a successful run last season, this production will return to Thoc's Main Stage, offering a Greek-language adaptation that brings the mystery and charm of Hercule Poirot's adventures back to life.
In addition to Christie’s work, the season will feature Emily Brontë’s iconic novel "Wuthering Heights," directed by Achilleas Grammatikopoulos. This production, set to debut in the autumn, promises to deliver a powerful interpretation of the themes of passion and revenge that are central to Brontë’s narrative. A third Main Stage production is also planned, though details are yet to be announced.
On the New Stage, Thoc will present "Frost/Nixon," a play by Peter Morgan directed by Andreas Araouzos. This gripping piece is based on the famous 1977 television interviews between journalist David Frost and former U.S. President Richard Nixon, exploring the complex dynamics of power, accountability, and public perception in the wake of the Watergate scandal.
The season will also include a fresh take on Anton Chekhov’s "The Seagull," directed by Athena Kasiou. This production will creatively utilize Thoc’s own building as a performance space, enhancing the play's exploration of shattered dreams and artistic aspirations.
For younger audiences, Thoc has programmed "Little Red Riding Hood," a contemporary adaptation of the classic fairy tale by playwright Andri Theodotou and director Fotis Nikolaou. This version aims to engage primary school children with a fresh, poetic lens on the beloved story.
Additionally, the play "Seeds" by Costas Mannouris will tour secondary schools across Cyprus, telling the story of two teenagers who discover the Garden of Humanity, a metaphorical space where hope and resilience flourish despite adversity.
Returning to the Experimental Stage, Stella Voskaridou’s "A Thousand Hands" will delve into the life of sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas, examining the interplay between creativity and personal struggle. Directed by Nikolaou, this production promises to be a poignant exploration of the artist's journey.
In an innovative initiative, Thoc has invited three Cypriot playwrights to develop original works inspired by classical texts, aiming to create contemporary pieces that resonate with both local and universal themes. These productions will be directed by different directors and announced in due course.
Finally, the previously staged reading "Place of Memory," which draws from Costas Montis’ novella "Closed Doors" and Thodosis Pierides’ "Cypriot Symphony," will return as a fully staged production under the direction of Maria Mannaridou Karsera.
The Cyprus Theatre Organisation is also in the process of planning an artistic programme for summer 2027, which will be revealed in the coming months. With a rich lineup of productions catering to audiences of all ages, Thoc is poised to deliver a vibrant and engaging theatre season that celebrates both classic and contemporary works.
