Cyprus is set to participate in the 23rd Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. The Cyprus Olympic Committee (KOE) has announced a delegation of 65 members, including 36 athletes who will compete across six different sports. This marks a significant moment for Cypriot athletics as the Games are expected to host over 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations, making it the largest Commonwealth Games since 2014.
The Cypriot team will consist of 23 male and 13 female athletes. They will compete in athletics, judo, artistic gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, and para weightlifting. The inclusion of para weightlifting highlights Cyprus’ commitment to promoting equality in sports, with particular emphasis on athlete Maria Markou, who will represent the country in this discipline.
During the announcement of the national team, KOE President George Chrysostomou emphasized the importance of the Commonwealth Games as a premier multi-sport event and a crucial platform for showcasing Cypriot talent on an international stage. He expressed confidence in the athletes' abilities and acknowledged the vital support provided by coaches, families, and staff throughout their preparation.
Chrysostomou also revealed that Cyprus had successfully secured three additional athlete spots after requesting more places, which reflects the committee's commitment to broadening participation in the Games. He reiterated the KOE's dedication to investing in athletes and sports federations, ensuring that resources are allocated to those working on the development of sports and the preparation of competitors.
The estimated cost for Cyprus' participation in the Commonwealth Games is around €100,000. In addition, the Cyprus National Paralympic Committee and various sports federations will receive support through a €27,000 grant from the Commonwealth Sport Team Preparation programme. This funding is aimed at enhancing the overall experience and performance of the athletes.
British Deputy High Commissioner Adam Sambrook remarked on the significance of the Games, highlighting their role in fostering friendship and fair competition among participating nations. He also noted that Cyprus will present its own Commonwealth baton in Glasgow, a unique piece crafted by local artists Eli Salame and Kyprianos Demosthenous, further showcasing Cypriot culture at the event.
The Cypriot delegation will include 13 athletes in athletics, eight in judo, six in artistic gymnastics, six in swimming, two in weightlifting, and one in para weightlifting. The management team is scheduled to arrive in Glasgow on July 20, while the athletes will travel in stages leading up to their respective competitions.
