According to data published on Monday by the Statistical Service, the deficit reached 4,679.1 million euros in the January–June 2026 period, up from 4,055.1 million euros in the first half of the previous year. The foreign trade data includes final figures for May and preliminary figures for June. Imports up 11.9% in June Total goods imports totalled 1,289.3 million euros in June, up from 1,152.2 million euros in the same month of 2025, an increase of 11.9%. Imports from other European Union member states amounted to 730.7 million euros, while those from third countries stood at 558.6 million euros. In June 2025, the corresponding figures were 615.1 million euros and 537.1 million euros. June’s imports include the transfer of economic ownership of ships worth a total of 117.8 million euros, compared with 55.8 million euros in the same month of 2025. At the same time, total goods exports fell to 463 million euros, a decline of 9.9%, from 514.1 million euros in June of the previous year. Exports to other EU member states came in at 212 million euros and to third countries 251 million euros, compared with 149 million euros and 365.1 million euros respectively in June 2025. Exports include the transfer of economic ownership of ships and aircraft worth a total of 77.3 million euros, compared with 68.5 million euros in June 2025. The first-half picture Total goods imports for the January–June 2026 period reached 7,296.8 million euros, up 8.8%, compared with 6,705.4 million euros in the same period of 2025. By contrast, total goods exports fell 1.2%, to 2,617.7 million euros, from 2,650.3 million euros in the first half of 2025. The rise in imports and the simultaneous fall in exports led to the widening of the trade deficit to 4,679.1 million euros. Imports up 22.4% in May Based on final data for May, total goods imports reached 1,309.4 million euros, up 22.4%, from 1,070.1 million euros in May 2025. Exports of domestically produced goods, including ship and aircraft stores, rose 63.9%, reaching 348.1 million euros, from 212.4 million euros. Industrial product exports specifically, excluding ship and aircraft stores, amounted to 334.7 million euros, compared with 197.9 million euros in May 2025. Agricultural exports, also excluding ship and aircraft stores, fell to 12.2 million euros, from 13.3 million euros. Exports of foreign products, including ship and aircraft stores, rose 50.5%, reaching 173.5 million euros, compared with 115.3 million euros in May 2025. Fuel, halloumi and pharmaceuticals lead exports The main categories of domestically produced exports for the January–May 2026 period were mineral fuels and oils, halloumi, and pharmaceutical products. The value of mineral fuel and oil exports reached 743.6 million euros, halloumi exports stood at 167.5 million euros, and pharmaceutical exports came in at 144.2 million euros. These amounts do not include ship and aircraft stores.
