**Cyprus, UK to Finalise Strategic Dialogue by Year-End**
Cyprus and the United Kingdom are on track to finalize a new strategic dialogue by the end of this year, according to Cyprus' Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. This announcement came after his recent discussions in London with Lord Stewart Wood, the UK’s Under Secretary for Europe.
The meeting, which took place at the Foreign Office, focused on various topics including bilateral relations, the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, and the ongoing Cyprus problem. Following the talks, Kombos emphasized the commitment from both nations to strengthen their ties, building on previous discussions held during his visit to London in July.
Kombos stated that the strategic dialogue has been "decided and finalised," with preparations underway for its implementation by year-end. A significant part of the discussions revolved around the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, where both sides revisited issues from earlier conversations while also introducing new topics for consideration.
The Cypriot government is keen to establish a more structured and institutionalized dialogue concerning the British bases, which have been a longstanding aspect of the relationship between Cyprus and the UK. Kombos expressed anticipation for the finalization of a date to initiate this dialogue, indicating a proactive approach to resolving outstanding matters related to the bases.
In addition to the discussions about bilateral relations, the meeting also addressed the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem. Kombos provided Wood with an update on Nicosia's stance following the recent visit of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus, as well as the efforts of his personal envoy. He reiterated Cyprus' readiness to resume substantive negotiations based on an agreed framework, signaling a desire for progress in resolving the longstanding division of the island.
Kombos also underscored the importance of the UK's role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, calling for "active and consistent assistance and support" from the UK in addressing the Cyprus issue. The two officials agreed to maintain communication on matters related to the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations, and regional developments.
As both countries move forward with their strategic dialogue, the focus will remain on enhancing cooperation and addressing key issues that impact their relationship and the broader geopolitical landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean.
