It remains the single most important gathering between the Republic of Cyprus and its organised diaspora. This is the summit where the year’s work gets weighed up, and where the bond between homeland and expatriate community grows tighter still. Gatherings like this exist to showcase cooperation, to keep the ties to the motherland alive, and to push national goals forward together, with diaspora organisations and the new generation of Cypriots abroad driving it. The contribution of our expatriates has always mattered, and the Republic never lets that go to waste. Their standing abroad, their access, their contacts in the countries where they live and work, all of it counts. They are our best ambassadors, the clearest voice for a people determined to be rid of occupation and see the homeland freed from the Turks. Quietly. Methodically. Without fanfare. As the Foreign Ministry has noted, this year’s Congress carries extra weight: it marks fifty years since the founding of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), an organisation that, like PSEKA, has given so much to this country. The presence of expatriate Cypriots on the island is an annual homecoming, part stocktaking, part strategy session. At the reception held in honour of the Congress delegates, President Christodoulides had a message for the home front too. Overcoming dividing lines and political differences, he told them, you operate as one, and you show us, in practice, the path Cyprus itself must follow. You prove, in action, that old truth: strength in unity. You prove that unity and cooperation give our homeland’s voice real power, and that this is a legacy worth handing to the generations still to come. We regard our expatriates as one of this country’s driving forces. They carry their own worries, their own frustrations, but we all know they work for the homeland without any hidden agenda, for the single cause of ending the occupation. Fifty-two years on from the invasion, and the occupation that has never lifted since, every force this country has must be mobilised for liberation.
