**Cyta and Connect Europe Host Workshop on Future of Digital Networks and Cybersecurity**
Nicosia, Cyprus – Cyta, in collaboration with Connect Europe, recently organized a workshop aimed at discussing the proposed European Digital Networks Act (DNA) and the revision of the Cybersecurity Act (Cybersecurity Act 2 – CSA2). The event gathered key stakeholders from various sectors, including public authorities, telecommunications providers, the business community, and representatives from European institutions.
The workshop commenced with welcoming remarks from Cyta's CEO, George Metzákis, and the Director General of Connect Europe, Alessandro Gropelli. They were joined by Marios Pieris, the Commissioner of Communications, and Kyriaki Pantziarou, the Director of Digital Policy and Communications, who also addressed the attendees.
A central theme of the workshop was the establishment of a modern and harmonized European framework designed to foster investment in advanced telecommunications networks, including fibre-optic networks and 5G, with a forward-looking view towards future 6G technologies. The discussions highlighted the importance of accelerating the development of innovative digital services, particularly focusing on the spectrum provisions outlined in the Digital Networks Act.
Participants emphasized the necessity of enhancing the security and resilience of telecommunications networks. Effective measures must be implemented to address potential risks, ensuring that critical services remain operational without interruption. The workshop also underscored the benefits that these advancements would provide to consumers, including improved service quality, increased reliability, higher internet speeds, and access to a broader array of advanced digital capabilities.
For Cyprus, the discussions held significant relevance, given the country’s already advanced telecommunications infrastructure. With fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) coverage reaching 95.5% and 100% 5G coverage, the establishment of a stable European regulatory framework is crucial for sustaining investment in next-generation networks and enhancing the security and resilience of critical infrastructure.
The importance of the topics discussed during the workshop was further reinforced by a recent joint initiative involving 17 leading European telecommunications organizations, including Cyta. In their collective statement, these organizations stressed the need for a regulatory environment that would enable Europe to maintain its competitiveness in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud services, and next-generation networks, while ensuring a robust level of security and resilience.
