**Death Toll from Blast at Indian Hydroelectric Project Rises to 20**
The death toll from a gas explosion that caused a tunnel collapse at a hydroelectric project in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim has reached at least 20 people. The incident occurred at a construction site for a 500-megawatt project operated by the state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
According to Rajiv Roka, director of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, 25 individuals were trapped in the tunnel at the time of the explosion. As of now, 13 bodies have been recovered, while rescuers have reported sighting an additional seven to eight bodies inside the collapsed structure, which have yet to be retrieved due to challenging conditions.
Rescue operations have faced significant obstacles, primarily due to waterlogging in the tunnel and the presence of methane gas leaking from underground rock formations. Roka noted that the accumulation of water has complicated efforts to recover the bodies, stating, “Looking at the condition, I don’t think there could be any survivors.”
The region has been experiencing heavy monsoon rains, further hindering recovery efforts. The NHPC released a statement indicating that the tunnel's collapse was caused by an "explosive release of suspected methane gas trapped/embedded in the rocks, resulting in the generation of dense smoke and toxic gases." They have committed to conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.
Accidents at large infrastructure projects are not uncommon in India. However, environmental experts have raised concerns that the rapid pace of development in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region is increasing the frequency of such disasters. The area's geological instability, characterized by seismic activity and unstable rock formations, poses significant risks for tunneling operations.
This tragic incident is reminiscent of a previous event in 2023 when 41 workers were rescued after being trapped for 17 days following the collapse of a Himalayan road tunnel in the northern state of Uttarakhand. The ongoing challenges in ensuring safety at construction sites highlight the need for stringent safety measures and oversight in the face of ambitious infrastructure development.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on recovering the trapped individuals and understanding the factors that led to this catastrophic event.
