**Title: Cyprus to Enhance Defence Capabilities Amid Complex Geopolitical Climate**
**Nicosia, Cyprus** – Cyprus is set to continue its efforts to strengthen and modernize its defence capabilities while fostering strategic partnerships with other nations, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas announced on Thursday. His remarks came during a ceremony following the Independence Day military parade, an event that celebrated the nation’s sovereignty and military readiness.
In his address, Minister Palmas emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing Cyprus’ role as a dependable partner within the European Union and the broader region. He noted that the current geopolitical landscape is increasingly complex, necessitating a proactive approach to national security. “Safeguarding freedom, security and peace requires constant vigilance, operational readiness and the ability to respond effectively to the challenges and demands of our time,” he stated.
Palmas reiterated the intentions of President Nikos Christodoulides, who has previously highlighted the importance of modernizing the country’s defence capabilities and strengthening strategic alliances. This commitment reflects Cyprus’ recognition of the need for robust defence mechanisms in light of regional tensions and security challenges.
During the parade, Minister Palmas paid tribute to those who have contributed to Cyprus’ struggle for freedom and independence, as well as to the men and women who have served in the defence and security sectors over the past 66 years. He expressed gratitude to the leadership and personnel of the National Guard and security forces, acknowledging their dedication and service.
The military parade featured participation from various international military personnel, underscoring the collaborative defence efforts between Cyprus and its allies. Notably, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias attended the celebrations, highlighting the strong ties between Cyprus and Greece. The presence of Greek fighter jets in the parade served as a symbol of this close relationship.
In addition to Greece, military representatives from Egypt, France, Britain, and the United States also participated in the event, with aircraft contributions from Egypt and Britain. This international involvement reflects the strategic partnerships that Cyprus is keen to develop further, enhancing its defence posture through collaboration.
Minister Palmas concluded his remarks by thanking the public for their attendance at the Independence Day celebrations, emphasizing the significance of national unity and pride. “Happy anniversary to the Republic of Cyprus and to the Cypriot people,” he said, reinforcing the importance of the day as a moment for reflection on the nation’s history and aspirations for the future.
As Cyprus navigates an increasingly challenging geopolitical environment, the government’s focus on modernizing its defence capabilities and strengthening international partnerships will be crucial in ensuring the nation’s security and stability.
