During a recent observation by the Cyprus Mail, multiple groups were seen circumventing the fence, which was intended to prevent dangerous jumps that have historically resulted in injuries and fatalities. The area's popularity as a jumping location has raised alarm among local authorities, prompting the installation of the barrier as a precautionary measure.
Onlookers noted that, within just an hour, two women managed to step around the fence, with one eventually jumping into the water. An employee from the Ayia Napa municipality, stationed nearby, attempted to intervene by warning the women of the risks associated with jumping. Following this, another municipal worker arrived at the scene, but by then, several young men had also entered the restricted area. While some complied with the request to leave, others proceeded to jump from the cliffs.
Glafkos Kyriacou, a spokesman for the forestry department, acknowledged the challenges in enforcing the fence's purpose. He stated that municipal employees are limited to issuing warnings and can only call the police if necessary. Despite the fence's ineffectiveness in completely eliminating jumping, Kyriacou noted a significant reduction in the number of jumpers, asserting that the situation remains under control.
The decision to erect the fence was driven by a series of incidents at the sea caves, including multiple deaths and injuries in recent years. Additionally, concerns about the stability of the rock formations in the area contributed to the forestry department's decision to implement this temporary measure.
