DIKO’s Secretariat met Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace for the second time recently, this time to discuss policy rather than ministries or semi-government organisations. The presidential election came up only briefly during the talks, party and government sources said. The two sides are seeking to open a new chapter in their relationship, aiming for closer cooperation and coordination, particularly as parliament heads into what is expected to be a difficult period, with a pre-election atmosphere gradually building ahead of the presidential vote. Sources described the meeting as taking place in a very positive atmosphere, with both sides moving to implement measures agreed earlier: regular meetings between DIKO’s parliamentary group and the government, and with the President himself, along with a new communication team to improve coordination on both current affairs and policy. Sources said both sides expressed satisfaction with the discussion, with some describing it as the kind of meeting that should take place between the President and a party supporting the government. Pension reform and changes to public service hiring and cross-departmental promotions were named as key priorities. On the presidential election, DIKO sources said that once Christodoulides makes his decision, he should inform the party, with the first thing to clarify being whether he will stand as a candidate. Sources added that the party should not be drawn into premature speculation about the election by the surrounding atmosphere, and that any discussion should take place within DIKO’s collective party bodies, where the final decision will be made. According to information, Christodoulides made no comment on the matter. DIKO’s district conferences are ongoing, having already taken place in Famagusta and Limassol, with an open agenda covering the parliamentary elections, the party’s policy and ideological direction, and the presidential election.
