**Disy Appoints Rita Superman as Shadow Minister for Refugee Policy**
On Wednesday, Annita Demetriou, the president of the Democratic Rally (Disy), announced the appointment of Rita Superman as the head of the party’s refugee policy portfolio. This decision comes as part of Disy’s strategic move to establish a shadow cabinet by assigning party officials to specific policy areas.
Rita Superman, a former Member of Parliament for Kyrenia, was recognized by Demetriou for her extensive experience and knowledge surrounding refugee issues. Demetriou highlighted Superman's previous role on the House refugee committee during the last parliamentary term, which she believes equips her well for the new position.
During the announcement, Demetriou expressed gratitude for Superman's contributions to the party's recent electoral efforts, despite Superman losing her parliamentary seat to Demos Georgiades, the acting president of the Paeek football club.
Reflecting on the historical context, Demetriou noted that it has been 52 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. She emphasized that displaced individuals and those who have lost property due to the conflict are entitled to state support. Demetriou called for “substantive proposals and interventions” to enhance refugee policy and address the ongoing challenges faced by refugees, particularly in light of the unresolved Cyprus issue.
In her response to the appointment, Superman expressed her appreciation for the confidence shown in her by Demetriou and the party. She committed to advocating for the needs of the refugee community, stating, “The injustices are many,” and underscored the continued demand for increased support from the state for displaced individuals.
Superman’s appointment is part of a broader initiative by Disy to strengthen its organizational structure and policy focus. The party has also proposed the establishment of a fund aimed at addressing the loss of use of properties located in areas outside the government’s control in the occupied northern part of Cyprus.
As Disy moves forward with its shadow cabinet formation, the appointment of Superman signals a renewed focus on refugee issues, which remain a critical concern for many in Cyprus.
