The announcement said Demetriou thanked Maouris for his longstanding presence and contribution to DISY. She also thanked him for his role in the party’s campaign in the recent elections, and said she was confident he would carry out his new duties responsibly and consistently. The DISY President said Maouris’s experience in local government, his knowledge of the tourism industry, and his active civic involvement are important assets for carrying out his new role effectively. Demetriou stressed that tourism is one of the main pillars of the Cypriot economy. She added that specific policies are needed to strengthen competitiveness, upgrade the tourism product, extend the tourism season, and support businesses and workers in the sector, the announcement said. Maouris thanked the DISY President for placing her trust in him and pledged to do everything he could to record the problems facing the tourism sector and submit specific, documented proposals, according to the announcement. Cypriot tourism must respond to intensifying international competition, Maouris said, and needs long-term planning, substantial support, and policies that create prospects for businesses, workers and local communities.
