**Duty Free Tobacco Seized from Limassol Hookah Venue**
Limassol, Cyprus – A restaurant in Limassol that specializes in hookah services has come under scrutiny following a customs inspection that led to the seizure of 7 kilograms of duty-free tobacco. The operation, conducted by the Limassol Customs Investigation Branch on Thursday, revealed multiple violations concerning the sale of tobacco and alcohol.
During the routine inspection, customs officers discovered that the establishment lacked the necessary licenses required to legally sell both tobacco and alcoholic beverages. This finding prompted immediate action, resulting in the confiscation of the tobacco and the arrest of the restaurant's owner on charges related to customs offenses.
Following the arrest, the case was resolved outside of court when the owner agreed to pay a fine of €3,200. This settlement allowed for the owner's release from custody. In accordance with customs regulations regarding smuggled goods, the seized tobacco will be destroyed.
The incident highlights ongoing efforts by customs authorities to enforce regulations surrounding the sale of tobacco products in Cyprus, particularly in venues that cater to specific consumer markets such as hookah lounges. The lack of proper licensing not only poses legal issues but also raises concerns about public health and safety.
Authorities continue to monitor establishments to ensure compliance with local laws, and further inspections may be conducted in the future to deter similar violations.
