**Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Poised to Become Deadliest in History, Warns WHO**
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a grave warning regarding the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), indicating that it is on track to become the deadliest outbreak recorded to date. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that, at its current pace, the outbreak could surpass the devastating epidemic of 2014-2016, which resulted in over 11,000 fatalities.
The current outbreak was officially declared on May 15, 2026, but health officials believe it may have started as early as February of the same year. To date, the outbreak has resulted in approximately 4,300 confirmed cases and over 2,000 deaths. Dr. Mohamed Janabi, the WHO's Africa director, emphasized the urgency of the situation during a news conference held in Bunia, a city near the epicenter of the outbreak. He noted that the virus is currently outpacing efforts to contain it, stating, "We are chasing the virus, the virus is ahead of us."
The outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo species of the Ebola virus, which has been responsible for only two previous outbreaks in 2007 and 2012. This particular strain poses additional challenges as there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutic drugs available to treat it. The ongoing regional instability in eastern DR Congo has further complicated containment efforts, with health workers only able to reach about 30% of reported cases.
Ebola is a rare but highly lethal viral disease. Symptoms typically manifest within two to 21 days following infection and may resemble those of flu or malaria, including fever, headache, and fatigue. As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea can occur, potentially leading to organ failure. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, including blood and vomit.
In response to the outbreak, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved the initiation of human trials for a vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain. Developed by a team from the University of Oxford, this vaccine utilizes the same technology as the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, three other research groups are working on different vaccine candidates for Bundibugyo, although these have not yet entered clinical trials.
The WHO is also sponsoring a clinical trial in DR Congo to evaluate whether existing antiviral therapies can enhance survival rates among those infected with the virus. The organization remains hopeful that with intensified efforts, the transmission of Ebola can be brought under control within three months, although this does not equate to the complete eradication of the outbreak.
As the situation develops, health authorities and international organizations are mobilizing resources to combat the outbreak and protect the affected populations. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as the potential for the outbreak to escalate further poses significant public health risks both within the region and beyond.
