**Eight Monks Killed in Thailand After Pickup Truck Driven by 11-Year-Old Boy Crashes into Pilgrimage Group**
In a tragic incident in northeastern Thailand, eight Buddhist monks lost their lives and over 20 others sustained injuries when a pickup truck, driven by an 11-year-old boy, collided with them during a pilgrimage. The accident occurred in Mukdahan province, where the group was traveling from one temple to another.
According to officials, the group consisted of 34 monks and five lay followers who were undertaking a pilgrimage from a temple in Mukdahan to a neighboring temple in Ubon Ratchathani province. Mukdahan Governor Vorayan Bunarat confirmed the details at a press conference on Thursday.
The collision resulted in immediate fatalities, with five monks pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional monks later succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment. Among the injured, 22 monks and one layperson were reported hurt, with four individuals currently in critical condition.
The driver of the pickup truck, identified as an 11-year-old boy with special needs, reportedly took the vehicle from his family home and drove approximately 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) before the crash occurred. Major General Pairoj Thaiphutra, the Mukdahan provincial police chief, stated that the boy is currently in a state of shock and has not yet been able to provide a statement to investigators.
As of now, police have not filed any charges related to the incident, as they continue to gather information and establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to understand how the young boy was able to access the vehicle and drive it.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding road safety and the responsibilities surrounding young drivers, particularly in cases involving children with special needs. The local community is mourning the loss of the monks, who were engaged in a spiritual journey, and many are expressing their condolences to the families affected by this heartbreaking event.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and more details emerge regarding the circumstances of the crash.
