**Emergency Services on High Alert for Holiday Weekend**
As the holiday weekend approaches, emergency response teams across public hospitals and the Okypy ambulance service in Cyprus are on full standby to address any potential emergencies. Charalambos Charliaou, a spokesman for Okypy, confirmed on Friday that the services are adequately staffed and prepared to respond to various situations, including traffic accidents and medical emergencies such as strokes and heart attacks.
Charliaou emphasized that the summer months often see an increase in patients due to various factors, including heat stress, minor accidents, and sunburn, all of which are exacerbated by the high temperatures typical of the season. "The emergency response centres and the ambulance service are always staffed with all the necessary doctors and relevant personnel," he stated, ensuring that resources are available to handle any influx of cases.
Traffic accidents, while a year-round concern, tend to rise during the summer due to increased road usage, particularly on weekends and holidays. Charliaou noted that the heightened traffic makes accidents more likely, and he urged the public to travel safely to their destinations. "We are alert for anything that may happen [and hope that] everyone will travel safely," he remarked.
In terms of the current situation in Accident and Emergency (A&E) units, Charliaou reported that the volume of incidents logged is consistent with previous years, both in number and nature. There has been a noticeable uptick in cases related to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly, who often have pre-existing cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. However, he reassured that, at this time, no patients are requiring hospitalization for these issues, as most are treated and discharged promptly.
As the holiday weekend unfolds, the readiness of emergency services remains a priority, with a focus on ensuring public safety during a time when many are out enjoying the summer weather.
