**Erhurman Emphasizes Turkish Cypriots' Desire for Solution During Guterres Visit**
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday, expressing the strong desire of the Turkish Cypriot community for a resolution to the longstanding Cyprus problem. The meeting took place at Erhurman's official residence in the northern part of the island, where he welcomed Guterres and highlighted the commitment of the Turkish Cypriots towards achieving a just and lasting solution.
During their discussions, Erhurman stated, “I believe you are aware of the Turkish Cypriot people’s strong will for a just and lasting solution.” He emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side is actively working to fulfill its obligations regarding confidence-building measures, which are crucial for fostering trust between the two communities on the island.
Erhurman referenced the past failures of reunification efforts, specifically mentioning the Annan Plan referendum in 2004 and the unsuccessful negotiations in 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana. He noted that, unlike those previous attempts, the current approach is based on a “new and realistic methodology” aimed at contributing positively to the common goal of reunification.
In response to Erhurman's remarks, Guterres reiterated his commitment to finding a solution for Cyprus, describing his visit as one of solidarity with the people of the island. He stated, “This visit is a visit of solidarity to the people of Cyprus and to show my strong commitment to make sure that we are able to have, finally, the solution in Cyprus.” Guterres acknowledged that the resolution of the Cyprus issue ultimately depends on the Cypriots themselves, while also recognizing the role of the island’s three guarantor powers: Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
The UN Secretary-General expressed his determination to support both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots during this critical time. Following his meeting with Erhurman, Guterres planned to engage with civil society groups and the Committee on Missing Persons. In the evening, he was set to host a dinner with both leaders at the residence of UN special representative Khassim Diagne, before convening a tripartite meeting at the UN’s good offices mission in Nicosia on Wednesday.
Guterres’ visit to Cyprus is part of a broader “new initiative” aimed at resuming earnest negotiations to address the Cyprus problem. This initiative is expected to culminate in a larger meeting later in the summer, which will involve both sides of the island, the three guarantor powers, and the UN.
As discussions continue, the focus remains on fostering dialogue and building confidence between the communities, with hopes that a renewed commitment from all parties involved will lead to a sustainable resolution of the Cyprus issue.
