**Escalating Israeli Strikes Kill Five People in Gaza, Medics Report**
Gaza Strip - On Thursday, Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling resulted in the deaths of at least five Palestinians, according to health officials in the region. This surge in violence comes as a US-based research group highlighted a significant increase in Israeli military operations, marking levels not seen since a ceasefire was established in October.
Reports from medics indicate that two individuals were killed in an Israeli airstrike near the Tuffah neighborhood in northern Gaza. Additionally, a third person lost their life due to Israeli tank shelling in the Zeitoun suburb of eastern Gaza City. Another airstrike targeted a tent encampment for displaced individuals in western Gaza City, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. Furthermore, an attack on a vehicle in Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the enclave, claimed another life.
Witnesses also reported an airstrike that struck a residential building in the Nuseirat refugee camp, causing damage to multiple nearby homes. As of now, the Israeli military has not provided any immediate comment regarding these incidents.
The recent fatalities contribute to a grim toll of over 1,100 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, reported killed by Israeli attacks since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect. This figure has been confirmed by Gazan health officials, while Hamas typically does not disclose its own casualties.
In a poignant statement, Jibril Khattab, a relative of one of the deceased, expressed his despair at the ongoing violence. "The entire people of Gaza have not lived a single day or a single moment of ceasefire. This ceasefire is an illusion," he stated outside Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. "No place in all of Gaza is safe," he added, reflecting the pervasive sense of insecurity among the population.
Despite the ceasefire halting major hostilities, Israeli strikes have continued almost daily. Since the truce, four Israeli soldiers have reportedly been killed by militants operating in Gaza. The conflict monitoring group Acled, which tracks military actions in the region, noted a sharp increase in airstrikes against Hamas and other militant groups, with over 40 strikes recorded in June alone—the highest monthly total since the ceasefire was enacted.
Nasser Khdour, the Middle East Assistant Research Manager at Acled, suggested that the rising violence may be influenced by domestic political pressures on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. With upcoming legislative elections in October, Netanyahu is facing increasing calls from opposition parties to adopt a more aggressive security stance against Hamas.
The Israeli government maintains that its military operations are aimed at preventing attacks from Gaza militants. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with nearly all of the enclave's 2 million residents living in cramped conditions, often in makeshift tents or damaged buildings, under the control of Hamas.
The ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences, with Israeli sources claiming that Hamas-led fighters killed approximately 1,200 individuals during their cross-border assault into Israel on October 7, 2023. In retaliation, the Gazan health ministry reports that subsequent Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of more than 73,000 Palestinians.
As the situation continues to evolve, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with calls for a renewed focus on peace and stability in the region becoming increasingly urgent.
