**Ethiopian PM’s Party Secures Dominant Election Win**
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party has achieved a significant victory in the country’s recent general election, securing a commanding majority in the 547-seat House of Peoples’ Representatives. According to the National Election Board, the Prosperity Party won 438 seats in the election held on June 1, as announced on Sunday.
The election saw participation from 42 political parties, but only 17 managed to gain representation in parliament. This highlights the overwhelming dominance of the Prosperity Party in the current political landscape of Ethiopia.
The electoral process took place across most regions of the country, with over 50 million registered voters. The electoral board reported a turnout rate of approximately 94%. However, it is important to note that voting did not occur in the northern Tigray region, which has been affected by ongoing instability following a two-year conflict between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front that concluded in 2022. Additionally, several areas in the Oromia and Amhara regions faced disruptions, with 143 polling stations unable to open due to security concerns.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been in office since 2018, following a series of internal reforms within the previously ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front. In 2019, he dissolved the coalition and established the Prosperity Party, merging several regional parties into a single political entity.
During his tenure, Abiy has implemented extensive political and economic reforms. However, his administration has also been challenged by ongoing conflicts, particularly in northern Ethiopia, as well as continued violence in the Oromia and Amhara regions.
Opposition parties, including the Oromo Federalist Congress, Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice, and the National Movement of Amhara, have voiced their discontent with the electoral process. They cited issues such as intimidation, restricted campaign opportunities, and the exclusion of prominent political figures, claiming that the election did not meet standards for being free and fair.
In contrast, the African Union Election Observation Mission reported that election day was generally peaceful, with voting conducted in an orderly manner at most polling stations they observed. Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who led the AU mission, encouraged Ethiopians to take pride in their country’s history of resilience against colonialism.
Ethiopia operates as a parliamentary republic, meaning that the composition of the federal parliament will play a crucial role in determining the formation of the next government and the selection of the prime minister.
Following the election results, the Prosperity Party expressed gratitude to the Ethiopian populace for their participation in what they described as a peaceful, credible, and historic electoral process. The party pledged to focus on inclusive economic growth, improving livelihoods, and expanding employment opportunities in the coming term.
As Ethiopia moves forward, the implications of this election will be closely monitored both domestically and internationally, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges the country faces in terms of security and political stability.
