**Exhibition Reimagines Larnaca’s Coastal Zone**
Larnaca, Cyprus – A new exhibition titled "Coastal Urban Futures" is set to take place from Friday to Sunday, bringing an innovative approach to urban design and marine sciences to the forefront of public engagement. Hosted along the coast of Larnaca, this three-day event aims to explore alternative futures for the city’s coastal zone, which is currently facing significant urban development pressures.
The exhibition is designed to address pressing social and environmental challenges linked to large-scale real estate development in the area. These challenges include the displacement of affordable housing, the reduction of public coastal spaces, increased vulnerability to climate change, and the degradation of coastal ecosystems, which has led to a concerning loss of biodiversity.
"Coastal Urban Futures" is the culmination of a nine-month collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including scientists, architects, urban planners, and local residents. This collaborative process has been essential in developing alternative urban scenarios that envision the coast as a shared space that promotes care and coexistence among its users.
The exhibition will feature a diverse array of activities aimed at engaging the public and fostering dialogue around these critical issues. Attendees can look forward to a series of workshops, discussions, and storytelling sessions that will draw on the collective knowledge of participants. The programme also includes film screenings curated by Cindy Chehab of ncineclub, which will provide a visual narrative to the themes of the exhibition.
In addition to film screenings, there will be a listening session led by Andromachi Gkoulia in collaboration with Pyrgatory Studios, offering an auditory exploration of the coastal zone's challenges and potential futures. Open discussions will be held with a panel of experts, including Dimitris Stagonas, Maria Hadjimichael, Anna Papadopoulou, Stalo Leontiou, and Andreas Panagidis, who will share insights and engage with the audience on the complexities of urban development in Larnaca.
For those interested in a more active exploration of the coastal area, a cycling tour organized by the OPU Collective will allow participants to experience the coastal zone firsthand while discussing its current state and future possibilities. Ongoing storytelling sessions led by Nayia T Karacosta, Nicola Mitropoulou, and Miriam Gatt will further enrich the exhibition, encouraging personal narratives and community involvement in shaping the coastal future.
The "Coastal Urban Futures" exhibition is taking place at the EVOHK Artist-Run Space, located in the former oil-refinery area at Castle-Pier Square in Larnaca. The event is part of a broader initiative to connect local realities with contemporary social, political, and environmental questions that resonate throughout the Mediterranean region.
