**Far-Right Activist Daniel Thomas Arrested After Slashing Dinghy in English Channel**
British police have arrested Daniel Thomas, a prominent far-right anti-immigration activist and leader of the Patriot Platform, following a controversial incident in the English Channel. The 37-year-old, known to his supporters as "Danny Tommo," was detained on Wednesday evening at a petrol station after he live-streamed footage of himself slashing an empty dinghy with a knife while a French coastguard official was present on board.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after approximately 50 migrants who had crossed from Normandy were brought to Dover for processing. During the live stream, which attracted more than 15,000 viewers, Thomas approached the dinghy in a yellow speedboat. Video footage shows him brandishing a knife and cutting into the inflatable hull, while shouting, “This is English territory, it is not France anymore.”
Thomas later clarified that his intent was to ensure “that is one boat that won’t be used again.” His actions have drawn significant attention and condemnation, leading to his arrest on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, as well as charges related to the Aviation and Maritime Security Act and the Merchant Shipping Act.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed his detention and stated that he remains in custody as investigations continue. This incident has sparked discussions around the ongoing crisis of migrant crossings in the English Channel, which has seen over 41,000 people making the perilous journey last year alone.
Thomas is known for organizing anti-immigration protests in Dover and Portsmouth earlier this month, which saw hundreds of demonstrators blocking roads. He founded the Patriot Platform earlier this year, promoting what he describes as “mass resistance” to reclaim the country from what he perceives as an invasion. His actions have garnered support from other far-right figures, including Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Robinson took to social media to assert that Thomas was arrested for attempting to “stop the invasion of our country.”
The issue of migrant crossings has become a focal point for various political factions in the UK, with figures like Nigel Farage of the Reform UK party labeling it a crisis. The government has faced ongoing challenges in addressing the influx of migrants, which has been a rallying point for anti-immigration activists and has influenced public discourse surrounding immigration policy.
As the situation develops, the implications of Thomas's actions and the broader context of immigration in the UK continue to unfold, with potential legal ramifications and public reactions likely to shape future discussions on this contentious issue.
