Nicosia, Cyprus - The two-day Fashion Fighting Stigma pop-up event, held at BAF in Nicosia on September 9-10, 2026, successfully engaged the public in a dialogue about mental health through the lens of fashion and art. The exhibition showcased a variety of garments, photographs, sketches, and audiovisual works, all aimed at challenging the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.

The initiative, which seeks to make the invisible visible, encourages individuals to confront the labels often associated with mental health issues. Each piece exhibited tells a unique story, providing insight into the lived experiences of those affected by mental health challenges, and fostering an environment free from fear and prejudice.

Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides attended the opening of the event and emphasized the significance of cultural and creative initiatives that promote social awareness. In his address, he underscored the importance of listening to individuals with lived experiences, highlighting that understanding and acceptance are crucial in addressing mental health issues.

Dr. Irshad Ali Shaikh, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Cyprus, was also present, alongside representatives from various institutions, organizations, and public bodies. The event served as a reminder that mental health is a universal concern, and meaningful change can occur when society engages in open discussions, listens without judgment, and fosters acceptance and inclusion.

The first evening of the event featured designers Vasiliki Charitonos and Sophia Kouvarou, who shared their personal and creative journeys influenced by their involvement in the project. Their testimonies illustrated the power of art as a medium for expressing complex emotions and experiences that are often difficult to articulate.

The second day included a dynamic discussion with participants Pantelis Panteli, Marianna Penga, Prodromos Stylianou, Savvia Ioannou, and Myrsini Aristidou. Audience members actively engaged in the conversation, expressing a desire for ongoing discussions surrounding mental health, including future dialogues focused on specific conditions.

Poly Gregora, Cyprus’ National Mental Health Ambassador and the creator of Fashion Fighting Stigma, noted that the initiative is expanding its reach beyond Cyprus. She emphasized that the voices of those with lived experiences must remain central to any significant changes in mental health discourse.

The organizers extended their gratitude to BAF for hosting the event, as well as to all designers, artists, speakers, collaborators, and supporters who contributed to the program. A special acknowledgment was given to photographer Andreas Gregoras, whose work effectively captured the essence of the creations and the overarching message of the project.

Fashion Fighting Stigma aims to continue its mission of raising awareness and fostering understanding around mental health issues. For more updates and information, interested individuals can follow the initiative on Instagram at @fightingstigmacy.
