While these advancements aim to enhance learning efficiency, they also raise concerns about the depth of understanding students retain when they rely heavily on technology.

A recent study led by David Stromberg from Stockholm University, alongside researchers Victor Lei and Yanhui Wu from the University of Hong Kong, sheds light on the potential drawbacks of AI in education. The study tracked approximately 27,000 students aged 12 to 18 in China over 30 months, analyzing their homework performance, monthly closed-book exam results, and high-stakes entrance exam scores across nine subjects.

The findings revealed a significant disparity between students' homework performance and their actual learning outcomes. After the introduction of generative AI, students' homework scores increased by 18%, while the time spent on assignments decreased by about 30%, dropping from an average of 64 minutes to 45 minutes. However, when these same students took monthly exams without the assistance of AI, their scores plummeted by 20% within six months. This decline was also observed in high-stakes entrance exams, indicating a troubling trend in the long-term retention of knowledge.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) echoed these concerns in its Digital Education Outlook 2026 report. The report suggests that when generative AI is used without proper guidance or educational structure, it can lead to improved task performance without corresponding gains in actual learning. This phenomenon has been described by researcher Dragan Gasevic as "metacognitive laziness," where students may become less engaged in the cognitive processes essential for deep learning.

How students utilize AI tools is crucial. A survey conducted by Ipsos for the Vodafone Foundation, involving 7,000 students aged 12 to 17 across seven European countries, revealed varying approaches to AI usage in education. The most common application was seeking information, with 56% of students reporting they used AI for this purpose. Additionally, 45% utilized AI to clarify terms and concepts, while 31% relied on it for complete solutions to assignments. However, fewer students engaged with AI in ways that fostered independent learning, with only 29% using interactive or adaptive content and 20% employing AI to develop personalized learning plans.

Beyond academic performance, AI is becoming an integral part of the broader student experience. According to the HEPI/Kortext Student Generative AI Survey 2026, which surveyed 1,054 full-time undergraduates in the UK, nearly half (49%) of respondents felt that AI had enhanced their overall student experience. Benefits cited included time savings, improved understanding of material, and access to instant, personalized support. However, the survey also explored the impact of AI on student well-being, revealing that 59% of students felt AI had no effect on their feelings of loneliness. Among those who did perceive a change, opinions were nearly evenly split, with 21% reporting reduced loneliness and 20% feeling more isolated.

As students and educators continue to adapt to the integration of AI in education, the challenge remains to balance the benefits of technological advancements with the need for meaningful learning experiences. The evidence suggests that while AI can facilitate quicker homework completion, it may inadvertently undermine students' ability to retain and apply knowledge in high-stakes situations. Moving forward, educators will need to develop strategies that harness the power of AI while ensuring that students engage in the critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for academic success and lifelong learning.
