**FIFA World Cup 2026 Sees Major Increase in Goals from Outside the Box**
The FIFA World Cup 2026, hosted in North America, has witnessed a significant rise in the number of goals scored from outside the penalty area. According to FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG), the proportion of such goals has doubled compared to the previous tournament held in Qatar. This year, 16% of all goals scored came from outside the box, a notable increase from the 8% recorded in 2022.
The rise in long-range goals has been attributed to evolving defensive strategies employed by teams throughout the tournament. Many teams have opted for a low-block defensive approach, which encourages opponents to attempt shots from distance rather than risk penetrating a crowded penalty area. Jurgen Klinsmann, a member of FIFA’s TSG and former manager of the US national team, explained that the high number of players congested in and around the box complicates goalkeeping efforts. “There’s no space – eight, nine players are in the box or outside the box, so it is definitely a recipe for shots from the outside,” Klinsmann noted. He added that the trend has produced some visually impressive goals, making it an exciting development for coaches and fans alike.
Arsene Wenger, FIFA’s chief of football development, echoed Klinsmann’s sentiments, praising the quality of shots taken during the tournament. “The balls look fast. Shots – they delivered rockets from outside the box, really. The quality of the shots was great in this tournament,” Wenger remarked.
Argentina has emerged as a standout team in this regard, having scored five goals from outside the box throughout the tournament. Notable among these was a stunning strike by Enzo Fernandez in the 85th minute of the semifinal against England, which played a crucial role in Argentina's comeback. Additionally, Julian Alvarez showcased his long-range capabilities with a remarkable curling shot from 22 yards against Switzerland, helping secure Argentina’s place in the semifinals.
The trend continued into the third-place match, where English midfielder Declan Rice opened the scoring with a well-placed shot from outside the box. This match turned out to be one of the most thrilling encounters of the tournament, culminating in a high-scoring affair where France ultimately lost to England 6-4.
As the tournament progresses, the increase in goals from outside the box highlights a shift in offensive tactics and showcases the evolving nature of football at the highest level. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if this trend continues in future matches and tournaments.
