The blaze broke out around 10:30 PM local time and was extinguished by Saturday morning. In response to the tragedy, Chile's President José Antonio Kast announced that a comprehensive review of nursing home conditions across the country would be initiated. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, stating, "We will fully collaborate with the justice system to clarify what happened, determine where failures may have existed in oversight or prevention, identify what alerts were raised and what actions were taken in response to them."
President Kast expressed his condolences and highlighted the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future. "We need to know the truth and, based on that, correct whatever is necessary to do everything possible to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again," he added.
Local mayor Jacqueline Romero also expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, "It is a situation that fills our souls with great sorrow and pain. We have been providing support to the families." The community is mourning the loss of life and grappling with the implications of the fire on the safety and oversight of care facilities for the elderly.
