**Fire Breaks Out Near Ergates Industrial Area**
On Tuesday, a significant wildfire erupted northwest of the Ergates industrial area in Nicosia, prompting an extensive response from local firefighting agencies and support services. The fire was reported to be consuming dry grass, which raised concerns about its potential to spread rapidly.
Fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed that the initial response included four fully staffed fire engines dispatched from Nicosia stations. This immediate action was complemented by additional support from the Forestry Department and the Game and Fauna Service, along with organized volunteer groups who joined the effort to control the blaze.
In an effort to combat the fire from the air, two firefighting aircraft were deployed promptly. As the situation developed, two more aircraft were mobilized to enhance the aerial firefighting capabilities. The Nicosia Emergency Operations Authority (EOA) also contributed to the response by sending two excavators and a water tanker to assist ground crews in their efforts to contain the fire and prevent further spread.
As of Tuesday afternoon, firefighters remained on site, working diligently alongside ground and aerial teams to bring the situation under control. However, authorities had not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or the extent of the area affected.
The situation is ongoing, and updates are expected as firefighting efforts continue. Local residents and businesses in the vicinity are advised to stay informed and follow any safety instructions from authorities.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
