**Fire Chief Warns of Most Dangerous Day of Wildfire Season in Cyprus**
Cyprus is bracing for what could be the most perilous day of its wildfire season, according to a warning issued by Fire Brigade Chief Nikos Longinos on Thursday. The alert comes as the island experiences extreme temperatures coupled with strong winds, creating a critical environment for the outbreak and rapid spread of wildfires.
Longinos emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “Today is perhaps the most difficult day of the fire season.” He highlighted that the current weather conditions—characterized by prolonged heat, low humidity, and gusty winds—pose an exceptionally high risk for wildfires. These factors can exacerbate even minor fires, making them difficult to control.
In response to the heightened risk, authorities have mobilized resources across Cyprus to ensure that any fire outbreaks can be addressed promptly. Longinos, however, cautioned that despite these preparations, no country can guarantee complete containment of major wildfires. He pointed out that even nations with more extensive firefighting resources, such as Canada, Spain, and France, have faced challenges in managing wildfires effectively.
Longinos warned that the elevated risk of wildfires is expected to persist beyond Thursday until there is a significant change in weather conditions, particularly until rainfall occurs. “In the coming days, until conditions change and especially until it rains, we will be on standby, with the aim of extinguishing any fires in the initial stages,” he stated.
Reflecting on the lessons learned from last summer's devastating wildfire in Limassol, Longinos noted that authorities have taken steps to enhance preparedness. Following the incident, which raised concerns about the effectiveness of the firefighting response, officials have worked to address identified weaknesses. Longinos acknowledged the improvements made but also recognized that there remains room for further enhancements in wildfire management.
As of now, more than 1,350 rural fires have been reported in Cyprus since the beginning of the year, a figure Longinos described as “exceptionally high.” He emphasized that the majority of these wildfires are attributed to human activity, underscoring the importance of public awareness and prevention efforts in mitigating fire risks.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately. The Fire Brigade is prepared to act swiftly to contain any outbreaks, but cooperation from the public is crucial in preventing potential disasters.
With the ongoing threat of wildfires, Longinos and his team remain committed to protecting the island's natural resources and ensuring the safety of its residents. The community is encouraged to stay informed and heed any warnings issued by fire authorities in the coming days.
