**Fire near Polis Chrysochous Brought Under Control**
A wildfire that ignited on Wednesday afternoon in a reed bed near Polis Chrysochous, located in the Paphos district of Cyprus, has been successfully brought under control. The fire service reported that the blaze burned approximately eight decares of land before it was contained.
Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis provided details about the response efforts, stating that five fire engines from the local stations in Polis Chrysochous, Stroumbi, and Peyia were dispatched to combat the flames. In addition, five fire engines from the forestry department joined the firefighting efforts. A bulldozer was also utilized to assist in the operation, highlighting the coordination between various firefighting units.
To tackle the fire from the air, two firefighting aircraft conducted initial water drops, followed by two helicopters that continued aerial operations to secure the perimeter of the fire. This multi-faceted approach was crucial in preventing the fire from spreading further.
Kettis confirmed that the affected area primarily consisted of a riverbed, and the fire service was able to protect nearby homes and an orchard from the advancing flames.
