**First Phase of Pedieos River Restoration Project Completed**
The first phase of the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere Restoration Project has been successfully completed, marking a significant advancement in the development of a greener and more accessible public space in Nicosia. The announcement was made by UNDP Cyprus on Friday, highlighting the project's potential to enhance environmental sustainability and community engagement in the divided capital.
Funded by the European Union through the Assistance Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community, the project is being implemented by the UNDP. Its primary objectives include the restoration of natural habitats, the enhancement of public spaces, and the promotion of community interaction.
To celebrate the completion of this initial phase, EU and UNDP officials, along with local cycling groups, community organizations, and residents, participated in walking and cycling activities along the newly established route. This festive gathering underscored the project's commitment to fostering a sense of community and encouraging active lifestyles among Nicosia's residents.
The first phase of the project encompasses a 1.2-kilometer stretch that connects the Ledra Palace crossing to the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere corridor. This newly developed infrastructure features a two-way cycle lane and a pedestrian walkway, complemented by a green belt designed to enhance safety and accessibility for all users. Such improvements are expected to facilitate greater access to nature within the urban environment.
UNDP Cyprus emphasized that the project is not only about infrastructure but also aims to promote sustainable living and environmental awareness. By improving walking and cycling infrastructure, the initiative seeks to strengthen community ties and encourage a healthier lifestyle among residents.
One of the ambitious goals of the Pedieos River restoration project is to attract approximately 250,000 visitors annually. This will be achieved by increasing green spaces, restoring the river's natural habitat, and providing accessible recreational areas for the public. The project's design prioritizes environmental protection and aims to create a vibrant community space that can be enjoyed by all.
The completion of phase one has been hailed as a major milestone in the broader restoration effort. Looking ahead, phase two is set to commence in September. This next phase will focus on expanding the walking and cycling network further, promoting sustainable mobility, enhancing recreational opportunities, and fostering community interaction throughout Nicosia.
