**Fitiris Promises Stronger Police Presence in Limassol**
Limassol, Cyprus – Justice Minister Costas Fitiris has announced plans to enhance police presence in Limassol, addressing ongoing concerns regarding crime and public safety in the city. This commitment was made during a meeting with Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and a municipal delegation on Friday.
Fitiris emphasized that new recruits would be deployed to bolster bicycle patrols and the rapid response ‘Z’ unit, which is crucial for maintaining safety in public areas. The discussion also touched on various pressing issues, including delinquency, road safety, and noise pollution, all of which have been points of concern for residents.
Mayor Armeftis expressed his approval of the bicycle police initiative, advocating for its expansion to further improve community safety. The meeting's urgency was underscored by recent incidents, including a reported indecent assault involving a woman at Dasoudi beach, which has heightened public anxiety about safety in the area.
In light of these concerns, Disy MP Fotini Tsiridou, who chairs the House legal affairs committee, has called for increased police visibility in public spaces. She urged Fitiris to implement more patrols and enhance community policing efforts. Tsiridou also highlighted the need for a comprehensive crime prevention strategy, particularly along coastal pedestrian routes, where she noted that improved lighting and visibility assessments are necessary to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
During the meeting, Fitiris and Armeftis also addressed the pressing need to relocate the Limassol district police directorate. The Justice Minister acknowledged the request to identify state-owned land for a new police building and indicated that the proposal to transfer the existing premises to the municipality would be considered.
Additionally, the issue of illegal street racing was discussed, with Fitiris stating that meetings with relevant authorities would commence in early January to devise proactive measures to combat this problem.
