**Fitto ‘Honoured’ to Be Named EU’s Cyprus Envoy**
Raffaele Fitto has expressed his honor and commitment following his recent appointment as the European Commission’s new envoy for the Cyprus problem. The announcement of his role was made on Monday, marking a significant step in the European Union's engagement with the ongoing issues surrounding Cyprus.
In a statement, Fitto acknowledged the trust placed in him by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, saying, “I would like to thank President Ursula von der Leyen for her trust and confidence. I welcome this responsibility and remain fully committed to supporting the United Nations-led process.” His remarks highlight a dedication to fostering dialogue and cooperation in the region.
Fitto emphasized his intention to facilitate the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting settlement for Cyprus. He stated that he aims to build trust among all stakeholders and interlocutors involved in the process, indicating a collaborative approach to addressing the complexities of the Cyprus issue.
Unlike his predecessor, Johannes Hahn, who served as an Austrian diplomat, Fitto is currently an active member of the European Union’s college of commissioners. He was appointed as the executive vice president for cohesion in 2024, a role that underscores his ongoing involvement in EU governance. His previous experience includes serving as Italy’s European affairs minister from 2022 to 2024 and holding two separate terms as a member of the European Parliament between 1999 and 2000, and from 2014 to 2022. Additionally, Fitto was Italy’s regional affairs minister from 2008 to 2011 under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Fitto's recent visit to Cyprus at the end of last month further underscores his commitment to the role. He attended the final EU high-level conference in Paphos, which focused on the challenges faced by islands and coastal communities, an event that aligns with his new responsibilities regarding Cyprus.
As the new envoy, Fitto's task will involve navigating the intricate political landscape of Cyprus, which has been divided since 1974. His experience in European affairs and his recent roles in the EU may provide him with the necessary tools to engage effectively with both Cypriot leaders and international stakeholders.
The appointment of Fitto comes at a crucial time for the Cyprus issue, with ongoing efforts to rekindle dialogue and pursue a peaceful resolution. His commitment to supporting the UN-led process suggests a continuation of the EU's role in facilitating discussions aimed at resolving the long-standing division of the island.
As he embarks on this new chapter, Raffaele Fitto's experience and proactive stance may play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Cyprus and its relationship with the European Union.
