**Five Arrested as Police Issue 295 Traffic Fines in Overnight Operation**
In a significant overnight operation, police across Cyprus arrested five individuals for various offences and issued a total of 295 traffic fines. The operation, which aimed to enhance road safety and enforce the law, was reported by police on Tuesday.
During the extensive operation, law enforcement officials stopped and inspected 426 vehicles, checking a total of 563 drivers and passengers. The traffic fines included 79 for speeding, highlighting a continued concern regarding excessive speed on the roads.
In addition to speeding violations, police reported a range of other offences. These included cases of impersonation, unlawful possession of property, malicious damage, threats, and illegal stay in the Republic of Cyprus. The diverse nature of these offences indicates a broad approach by police to maintain public safety and order.
The operation also extended beyond traffic enforcement. Police conducted 40 inspections of various premises, which led to four complaints being filed. This aspect of the operation underscores the police's commitment to not only road safety but also to monitoring compliance with other laws within the community.
As part of the traffic enforcement efforts, officers performed 67 alcohol breath tests. Out of these tests, five drivers were found to be over the legal alcohol limit, indicating ongoing issues with driving under the influence. Additionally, police conducted four initial drug tests, with two returning positive results, further emphasizing the challenges law enforcement faces regarding substance use among drivers.
In a proactive measure, authorities seized 13 vehicles during the operation, which may have been involved in various infractions or deemed unsafe for road use. The seizures reflect the police's ongoing efforts to ensure that only compliant vehicles are allowed on the roads.
The operation is part of a broader strategy by the Cyprus police to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents. By conducting such operations, law enforcement aims to deter reckless driving and other unlawful behaviours that can compromise public safety.
As the police continue to carry out these operations, they encourage the public to adhere to traffic laws and regulations, emphasizing that compliance is essential for the safety of all road users. The results of this overnight operation serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to maintain order on Cyprus's roads.
The police have not disclosed whether there will be additional operations in the near future, but the current results suggest a sustained focus on traffic enforcement and public safety initiatives.
