The programme is curated by Io Paschou, a PhD in Art History and Assistant Professor at the University of West Attica, and brings together five photographers and visual artists from four countries: Samar Baiomy from Egypt, Konstantinos-Sofoklis Konstantinou from Cyprus, Romane Iskaria and Gaëtan Soerensen from France, and Ioanna Spentzou from Greece. The residency draws on the spirit of the Bicentenary of Photography (Bicentenaire de la Photographie), a commemorative initiative by the French Ministry of Culture marking 200 years since Nicéphore Niépce created the first photographic image. Following the Bicentenary’s invitation to “celebrate the gazes” (célébrer les regards) and its founding premise that photography was born from “a utopian dream: that it was possible to narrow the gap between reality and its representation,” RE-VISIONS turns its focus on Cyprus, treating the island not as a mere backdrop but as an active agent in shaping history. The programme approaches Cyprus as a place where personal and collective memory meet, intersect and are rewritten over time, describing the island as a constantly shifting temporal palimpsest to be observed and re-examined through different artistic perspectives and contemporary photographic practices. Participants are asked to engage with traces of the past, multiple versions of memory and questions of identity, offering readings of a place that continues to be reinterpreted through the artistic eye. The programme aims to strengthen international creative networks, support original artistic production and highlight new aesthetic approaches to photography, while contributing to the promotion of material and immaterial heritage through fresh artistic readings of the island. It is based in the village of Malounta, in the Nicosia district, where it aims to create a space for experimentation, research, knowledge exchange and intercultural dialogue linking contemporary art with Cyprus’s history, memory and landscape. Once the residency concludes, the artists’ work will be shown publicly at Garage Art Space in Nicosia, from November 25 to December 6, 2026. The presentation marks the first step towards a hybrid, evolving exhibition that will travel abroad in 2027, extending the dialogue RE-VISIONS builds between Cyprus, France, Greece and the wider Mediterranean. RE-VISIONS is officially part of the Bicentenary of Photography and is supported by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the French Institute, as part of a strategy for the international development of the cultural and creative industries, as well as by Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus.
