**Flooding from Tropical Storm Maysak Claims 39 Lives in Southern China**
Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China – The aftermath of Tropical Storm Maysak has left a devastating mark on southern China, with reports confirming that at least 39 individuals have lost their lives due to severe flooding. The majority of casualties occurred following the breach of a dam, which led to widespread inundation in the city of Nanning.
Ding Wei, the vice mayor of Nanning, disclosed the tragic death toll during a news briefing on Thursday, July 9, 2026. This figure represents a significant increase from an earlier estimate of six fatalities, highlighting the escalating impact of the storm as rescue operations continue. The torrential rains that accompanied Maysak caused record levels of rainfall, overwhelming reservoirs and unleashing torrents of water across towns and cities in the Guangxi region.
The breach of the dam in Nanning was particularly catastrophic, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals. In response to the disaster, approximately 130,000 residents have been evacuated from affected areas. Rescue efforts are being conducted on a large scale, utilizing drones and thousands of boats to reach those stranded by the rising waters.
The national meteorological center reported that southern Guangxi experienced heavy rainfall over several days, with some areas recording cumulative precipitation between 10 to 40 centimeters (4 to 16 inches) and particularly hard-hit regions receiving over 90 centimeters (35 inches) of rain.
In total, more than 8,000 rescue personnel, along with around 5,700 boats, have been deployed to assist in the relief operation. Rescuers face significant challenges, including strong currents and debris, as they work to reach victims trapped by the flooding. While Ding noted that floodwaters are beginning to recede, forecasts indicate that additional rain may impact certain areas in the coming days.
In addition to human casualties, the flooding has also affected local wildlife. At least 100 animals, including alpacas, miniature pigs, and zebras, escaped from the Guigang Zoo in Guangxi province after flooding compromised their enclosures. The zoo has issued a public appeal for assistance in locating the escaped animals, which include two North American raccoons, four porcupines, and thirty peacocks. The zoo has cautioned the public to maintain a safe distance from these animals, as they may be frightened and potentially aggressive.
As recovery efforts continue, crews are working diligently to clear mud and debris from the streets of Hengzhou city, which is located east of Nanning and falls under its jurisdiction. Road repairs are currently underway, and electricity has been restored to over 60,000 homes in the region.
