**Forestry Department Issues Fire Alert Ahead of Mid-August Holidays**
As the mid-August holiday approaches, the Forestry Department of Cyprus has issued a renewed warning regarding the heightened risk of forest fires due to human activities. This alert comes as many residents and visitors prepare to celebrate the religious day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15, a time when picnicking and outdoor activities in the mountains are particularly popular.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Forestry Department emphasized the importance of exercising extreme caution during this period. With an influx of people expected to gather in forested areas for leisure activities, the risk of accidental fires increases significantly. The department specifically urged individuals to be vigilant when using charcoal for barbecues, recommending that they only utilize designated areas for such activities to minimize fire hazards.
In addition to barbecue safety, the Forestry Department highlighted the responsibilities of holiday home owners. Those who hire laborers to clear gardens are reminded that any cuttings should not be burned on-site. Instead, they should be disposed of safely to prevent any potential fire outbreaks.
The Forestry Department reiterated existing regulations that are in place to protect forested areas. From June 1 to September 30, it is strictly prohibited to use tools or machinery that may generate heat, flames, or sparks within forest areas or within a 2-kilometer radius of these zones. This regulation aims to mitigate the risk of fires during the peak summer months when conditions are often dry and conducive to fire spread.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could lead to fire outbreaks. In the event of smoke or fire, the public is advised to immediately contact the Forestry Department at 1407 or the fire service at 112.
The Forestry Department also reminded the community that causing a fire, whether intentional or accidental, is considered a criminal offense in Cyprus and can result in severe penalties. This serves as a crucial reminder for everyone to prioritize safety and adhere to guidelines designed to protect the natural environment.
