**Former Liberian Vice President Charged in Drug-Trafficking Probe**
Monrovia, Liberia – Jewel Howard-Taylor, the former Vice President of Liberia, has been charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, and various other offenses, as announced by the country’s Justice Ministry. The charges come amid a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in Liberia, particularly concerning the illegal cocaine trade that has increasingly affected the region.
Howard-Taylor, who served as vice president from 2018 until 2024, was apprehended at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia just before she was set to depart the country. Following her detention, she was taken to the national police headquarters for questioning. As of now, she has not publicly commented on the allegations against her.
The charges against Howard-Taylor include accusations of illegally importing, selling, and transporting controlled substances, as well as facilitating drug trafficking operations. This development marks a significant moment in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes, which have been on the rise in recent years.
In conjunction with Howard-Taylor’s arrest, Liberian authorities have also charged three foreign nationals—two from Croatia and one from Ukraine—in absentia. These individuals are believed to be connected to the same drug trafficking network as Howard-Taylor. The authorities have expressed their commitment to apprehending these suspects and dismantling the entire network involved in the illicit drug trade, which includes organizers, facilitators, and financiers.
The crackdown on drug trafficking in Liberia has intensified recently, with law enforcement agencies conducting several significant drug seizures, some of which are considered among the largest in the nation’s history. This surge in enforcement efforts aligns with the administration of President Joseph Boakai, who took office after George Weah’s presidency, which was marred by allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement.
President Boakai has made it clear that his administration aims to address corruption and prevent Liberia from becoming a hub for drug trafficking. West Africa has increasingly become a critical transit route for cocaine trafficking from South America to Europe, raising concerns about the region's role in the global drug trade.
The charges against Howard-Taylor and the ongoing investigations reflect a significant shift in Liberia’s approach to drug-related offenses, as authorities seek to restore public trust and ensure the rule of law in the country. The situation continues to develop, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
